Chimney Rock State Park Mural Restoration Project

There are three sets of restrooms at the state park with murals depicting the beautiful features of the area, with a very immersive feel to them. As you walk into the restroom it doesn't look like you've left the woods! The nature murals at Chimney Rock were originally painted by well known muralist Clive Haynes. He was an established artist who painted several murals across North Carolina during the course of his career, unfortunately, he passed away in January 2021. He was an incredible artist and I am honored for the opportunity to restore his work.

Several years have passed since the restrooms were originally painted and time had taken a toll on the images. The paint was faded, cracked, and even lifting from the walls in some places. Splashes from cleaning products and sanitizing procedures, due to the coronavirus pandemic, quickly deteriorated the images in the murals closest to the floor. This restoration project includes repainting some areas, brightening faded or discolored points in the mural, and keeping the original integrity of the imagery. My goal was to create a more solid and fresh appearance over all.
